Citizenship by Investment

Understand how investment-based immigration can fit a longer-term citizenship plan.

What this pathway involves

Plan responsibly from business immigration to permanent residence and citizenship.

Canada does not offer direct citizenship in exchange for an investment. Qualifying entrepreneurs and investors may instead pursue an available business immigration route that leads to permanent residence. Citizenship is a separate, later application with its own requirements, including valid permanent resident status and the required period of physical presence in Canada.

Important

Investment alone does not grant Canadian citizenship. Programme availability and eligibility must be confirmed before making financial or relocation decisions.

How investment and citizenship can connect

Business immigration and Canadian citizenship are separate processes. The stages below explain the possible long-term sequence.

  • 01Qualify for an available entrepreneur, investor, or business immigration programme
  • 02Meet the programme’s business, investment, job-creation, and residence obligations
  • 03Apply for and maintain Canadian permanent resident status
  • 04Accumulate the required physical presence and meet tax, language, knowledge, prohibition, and other citizenship requirements
  • 05Apply separately for Canadian citizenship when every citizenship requirement is satisfied

Common requirements and considerations

  • Eligibility for a currently available business immigration programme
  • Completion of the programme’s investment and business obligations
  • Valid permanent resident status before applying for citizenship
  • At least 1,095 days of physical presence in the five-year eligibility period, plus other citizenship requirements

Immigration rules and programme availability can change. The right requirements depend on your circumstances and should be confirmed before you apply.
