Study Permit

Plan your Canadian education and prepare a well-supported permit application.

What this pathway involves

Turn an offer of admission into a considered study plan.

A study permit allows most foreign nationals to study at a designated learning institution in Canada. A complete application normally begins with a letter of acceptance and may also require a provincial or territorial attestation letter, evidence of sufficient funds, and documents showing that the applicant meets the conditions of temporary residence.

Important

Eligible students may work off campus for up to 24 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, subject to the conditions of their permit and current IRCC rules.

Study-related options and permissions

The right option depends on the school, programme, permit conditions, and the rules in force when you apply.

  • 01Primary, secondary, college, university, and eligible graduate-level studies
  • 02On-campus work for eligible students who meet their permit conditions
  • 03Up to 24 hours of eligible off-campus work per week during regular academic sessions
  • 04Full-time eligible off-campus work during scheduled academic breaks
  • 05A Post-Graduation Work Permit after an eligible programme at an eligible DLI

Common requirements and considerations

  • Letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution
  • Provincial or territorial attestation letter, unless exempt
  • Proof of tuition, living, and return-transportation funds
  • Passport, purpose-of-study evidence, and other requested records

Immigration rules and programme availability can change. The right requirements depend on your circumstances and should be confirmed before you apply.
